Why this music?
Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the Choral, is a miraculous work. Profoundly deaf by the time he wrote the symphony, Beethoven created music so beautiful that it is played and loved throughout the world. He stretched the structure of a symphony, including human voices singing lyrics inspired by Friedrich Schiller’s “Ode to Joy.” He fearlessly proclaimed humanity to be brothers under a loving divine creator, meant to live in joy.
